Six ans après le succès de L'Hymne au Soleil (3 Victoires du Jazz et plus de 20 000 albums vendus), Lionel Belmondo revenait dans "Clair-Obscur" à la formule orchestrale qu’il avait explorée avec tant de brio. Cette suite logique et attendue atteignait les mêmes sommets de grâce et de pureté.
Saxophoniste, compositeur et arrangeur, Lionel Belmondo se réaffirmait en 2011 avec ce disque comme l'un des plus grands chefs de file du jazz français contemporain. Qu'il fût l'artisan de projets ambitieux aux côtés du mythique Yusef Lateef ou de la légende brésilienne Milton Nascimento, il continuait d'explorer sa voie, confrontant jazz et musique française du XXe siècle, improvisation et écriture serrée, dépassant tous les clivages, et proposant un éventail musical aussi riche que nuancé. Pour n'en garder que l'essence, s'appuyant sur l'ensemble instrumental qu'il avait lui même créé : l'Hymne au Soleil, soit le quintet des frères Belmondo associé à six instrumentistes issus des plus illustres formations classiques.
"Clair-Obscur" parcourt un siècle de musique réarrangée par Lionel Belmondo, de Gabriel Fauré à Erik Satie, en passant par des standards absolus de Bill Evans et Michel Petrucianni et des compositions nouvelles spécialement développées pour l’occasion.

Six years after the success of L'Hymne au Soleil (3 Victoires du Jazz Awards and more than 20,000 albums sold), Lionel Belmondo returned in 2011 with "Clair-Obscur" to the orchestral formula he had explored with so much gusto. This logical and expected sequence reached the same heights of grace and purity.
Saxophonist, composer and arranger, Lionel Belmondo reaffirmed himself with this record as one of the greatest leaders of contemporary French jazz. Whether he was the architect of ambitious projects alongside the mythical Yusef Lateef or the Brazilian legend Milton Nascimento, he continued to explore his path, confronting jazz and 20th century French music, improvisation and tight writing, overcoming all divisions, and offering a musical range as rich as it is nuanced. To keep only the essence, relying on the instrumental ensemble that he himself had created: the ensemble Hymne au Soleil, i.e. the Belmondo brothers' quintet associated with six instrumentalists from the most illustrious classical formations.
"Clair-Obscur" spans a century of music rearranged by Lionel Belmondo, from Gabriel Fauré to Erik Satie, including absolute standards by Bill Evans and Michel Petrucianni and new compositions specially developed for the occasion.
